In the beginning, there was only Muvi. Muvi Spaces didn't exist. We had built the space entirely for ourselves. We had no plan to rent it out. Only when the building was almost 80-90% complete did we realize that our core business (Muvi) was probably not coming back from being fully remote anytime soon. We then planned to use some of the space for rental and coworking. We still use some of the space for ourselves. I still come to the office every day.
The point is that everything you touch and feel has been designed for ourselves first, not for the sole purpose of renting it out. That changes the way decisions get made. Instead of optimizing for maximum seats and maximum revenue, we optimized for what we would personally want to use every day. You will get that premium feeling from everything in the building - from ceiling to the floor, from the walls to lights, outside and inside.
I lived in the USA for 26 years, worked in the corporate sector in the USA for 10 years before founding Muvi. I had never worked in India. My entire experience of how an office space should look and function was based on my experience in the USA. Good or bad, that's the lens through which I viewed every design decision in this building.
Following are some of the salient features we have designed in Muvi Spaces based on my experience in the USA and the fact that we built it for ourselves instead of renting it out.
1. Green Building
We are probably one of the greenest office buildings in Bhubaneswar, with 20 KW electricity from solar panels, rainwater harvesting, EV charging, reflective DGU facade glass to control temperature, and earthquake- and flood-resistant architecture. Sustainability wasn't an afterthought for us; it was built into the project from day one.
2. Exterior Design
Except for the back side that's not visible, 3 open sides of the building are all 100% glass. There is no concrete whatsoever.
3. Open Rooftop
6th floor (rooftop) is half open and half closed. We plan to make it a cafe and community space for people working at Muvi Spaces. The idea is simple: sometimes your best work happens away from your desk. They will get the benefit of both worlds - closed AC space and open rooftop during evenings.
4. Plenty of Storage
We have a large, wall-to-wall helmet storage in the basement, storage below staircases, storage in the power room. We borrowed heavily from the Japanese philosophy of keeping spaces minimalistic while intelligently incorporating storage wherever possible.
5. Individual Workspace Is Spacious
The individual desk in Muvi Spaces is 4ft by 2ft (width/depth). It's among the biggest in the country. We wanted everyone to have a very spacious desk. Working in the IT sector, some of us use 2 monitors. Everyone deserves a spacious desk. A comfortable workspace is not a luxury; it's where most professionals spend a large portion of their waking hours. We didn't want to squeeze out every inch possible to create another desk to make some extra bucks.
6. Individual Workspace Is Tall
It seems like a small but very important feature. In 99% of the office spaces, the separator across the desk is 1ft tall. People sitting across from each other can completely see each other. In an open setup that most offices have, it's very distracting. In Muvi Spaces, the separator is 2ft tall. You can't see the person sitting across from you. The separator is above the eye contact.
Such a separator was not available from Featherlite, our furniture vendor. We spent extra money to custom-design it because we felt the productivity benefit was worth it.
7. Separator Doubles as a White Board
I love writing things down, and I love white boards in the meeting rooms. Some of my best thinking happens on a whiteboard rather than on a screen. I wanted everyone to have a personal white board on their desk. The separator doubles as a whiteboard. You can write on it using a whiteboard marker.
8. Premium Featherlite Chair with Back-Support
We spent a lot on the chairs. I personally sit on the same chair for 10 hours a day. We practice a flat culture in Muvi where there is less hierarchy, everyone has a similar office setup, access to similar resources. This philosophy led to everything in the design where every desk space is premium, every component in the office building is premium.
If you ever stop by at Muvi Spaces, spend a few minutes sitting on our chairs. It's the best chair you will sit on in a Bhubaneswar coworking space. Guaranteed!
9. Super Luxurious Bathrooms
One thing I learned in the USA is that people pay a surprising amount of attention to bathrooms. There is a line "You can judge the quality of a restaurant/store/office by seeing the quality of their bathrooms.". We have applied the same in Muvi Spaces. You will find our bathrooms to be most spacious, cleanest and most modern. You will find premium features such as bidet, hand drier and touchless soap dispensers. Everything is touchless in order to be hygienic.
Many office spaces invest heavily in the visible areas and treat bathrooms as an afterthought. We intentionally took the opposite approach.
10. Modern Meeting Rooms
Our meeting rooms are sound proof. We used airgapped glass separators, i.e, two glasses with a small air gap in between and carpet tile for sound proofing.
Every meeting room comes with a wireless projector and remote-based projector screen that slides out from the ceiling.
11. World-class Maintenance
We currently have 4 people full-time for doing housekeeping and security out of which 2 people are 24x7. There is a dedicated phone number for housekeeping that you can call like in the hotels. We understand that an office space, no matter how well built and designed, is only as good as its maintenance. Buildings don't stay premium on their own. They require constant attention and care.
From the moment you see the building from a distance, to entering through the remote-controlled gate, to walking through the parking area and onto the working floors, our goal is that you feel the difference. Every tile, every glass panel, every staircase and every light fixture was selected with care.
Last but not the least, great customer service!!! Buildings can be copied. Furniture can be copied. Service is much harder to copy.
